So, I’m sure many of you have heard rumours that Instagram is taking away likes, followers, or even “shadow banning” accounts which I don’t think it’s true, shadow banning part I mean. But Mark Zuckerburg, owner of Instagram just announced that they are testing hiding the like count on Instagram pictures in Canada. This indicates that Instagram could be moving towards removing likes. So, what does that mean for influencers or business’? When a large part of their business is Instagram. Many may be going in a frenzy over this, now I want to tell you that it is not at all bad or as scary as you think. If we see what Instagram is really trying to do, which is boost up ENGAGEMENT and short VIDEO, then we may see that there is a light at the tunnel.
1. The content people actively engage with is the content they will see most or first on your feed
We are all fighting for a quick second of our follower’s time, hoping that our posts’ will show up at the top of your followers feed, and hopefully they like your post, right? However, it’s crazy difficult to fight for a second of your follower’s time when there are billions of users on Instagram and you are not the only account they follow. So how do you get on the top of your followers feed without them turning on the alert button? It’s ENGAGEMENT. Have you ever noticed on your own Instagram, the posts that show up the most are the posts you engage with THE most, not just liking their post, but also watching their stories, commenting on their post, sharing their post, and creeping on their feed? Yeah same, it’s because Instagram boosts up accounts where the followers are engaging in their content, not just liking, but commenting, watching their stories, engaging in the dms, and watching their IGTV.
2. No fake friends please, only the real one’s can stay
So, what’s the deal-eo with shadow banning? People are thinking they are “shadow banned” by Instagram for numerous of reasons, but it’s probably not the reason you’re thinking. Instagram is doubling down on fake inauthentic followers. They are trying to remove apps or accounts that will provide you fake followers and comments for a fee. if you look back to my first point, it’s all about ENGAGEMENT, but not fake one’s REAL engagement. If you are experiencing a so called “shadow banning”, it’s probably Instagram trying to stop spam accounts or accounts with fake followers.
3. Community over Competition
If you are new to my website, welcome! I know, what a random moment, but my brand is ALL about COMMUNITY over COMPETITION and Instagram is focusing on community too. In an article by Washington Post, Instagram’s head, Mark Mosseri, states “we don’t want Instagram to feel like a competition, we want to make it a less pressurized environment”. What this means is that Instagram wants us to connect and communicate with our followers or those who engage with our content.
There is often a bigger ROI with Instagrammers who are well engaged with their followers, whether they have 5,000, 10,000, or 100,000 followers. People still see a high ROI with lower follower counts because people aren’t buying or engaging with your content based on how many followers or likes you have, it’s based on if they know, like, and trust you. Don’t get me wrong, numbers are important, but creating a connection is greater. People buy from those who they know, like and trust.
4. IGTV is where it’s at babes!
Instagram has pumped out millions of dollars and numerous of resources to create IGTV because they see the value in video (ie. YouTube) and know that short videos are the FUTURE. Thus, they created IGTV and did not spend millions of dollars and countless of resources to not see it succeed. Instagram wants its users you to use IGTV because that’s another way to engage with their followers. A post is seen for a second, a story is seen for only 30s, and an IGTV can be seen for up to 10 minutes, this is another 10 minutes to engage with your followers.
Instagram also implemented a function where let’s say you make a ten minute IGTV, you can post a minute on your post and it will directly link to the full IGTV. This is a GAME CHANGER babes, not only are you teasing people with your IGTV there’s a direct link, easy peasy right? RIGHT!
If you also notice, accounts you follow who use IGTV are the ones you see most on your time line and story timeline, it’s because they want to push up the use of IGTV and not let their investment go to waste. Videos not only allow followers to get to know, like and trust the user even more, but it also helps those who use IGTV to have their content be seen a lot more, see it as Instagram rewarding those who use its tools, in this case it’s IGTV.
Throughout this whole blog post, the one thing I want you to take away is that ENGAGEMENT is key babes! The future of Instagram is REAL engagement, it looks like they want to re-wire social media from competition, negativity, fakeness, anxiety to a more engaging community, a community where people genuinely care for one another and a community of real followers and likes. So, don’t worry so much about what your competitors are doing, don’t worry about your number count, worry about the community you already have and connect with them!
